Having made the winning bid, Olaf had two weeks to collect the vehicle from the UK.

Collecting the vehicle :

After a little trouble hiring a large enough trailer, Olaf Drove off toward the UK with his Land Rover 110 and trailer combo. Passing through Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium and France to the Euro tunnel terminal. Once through the Euro tunnel, a bit of rest was in order. Next day, Olaf arrived at Higher Holway Farm. The vehicle was given a test run before loading onto the trailer, loading was to prove troublesome however. Once the vehicle was safely on the trailer, it was strapped down for the journey home, back through the Eurotunnel, etc. to Germany. Once home, Olaf unloaded the vehicle from the trailer and went to bed. The trip back had been a bit disconcerting for him because the trailer was a little overloaded, but the 2,000 kilometre round-trip was completed within three days.

Unloading the vehicle At Home

Stripping down the vehicle :

The vehicle was unloaded onto the driveway at home. Olaf began to inspect it more closely, and he soon started to strip it down. Almost immediately the project was outgrowing the carport and the driveway, so Olaf did a deal to secure garage space for the rebuild. The vehicle was moved to the garage, and the full-on strip down began.

At Home Moved to the garage

Rear Load-bed removed Seat boxes and floorpan removed

At Home All bodywork except bulkhead removed

All of the body panels were removed to allow access to the engine and running gear. The next stage was to strip out these parts to leave a bare chassis.

Last items to be removed Removing the bulkhead

Bulkhead removed Engine removal

Engine and almost all other parts removed from the chassis All parts removed from the chassis

Now that the vehicle is totally stripped down, the real rebuild begins.

Rebuilding and refurbishing the vehicle :

All of the salvageable steel body parts were sent away for stripping of paint and sealant, returning in bare metal form, allowing repainting. The chassis however, needed some remedial work to fully restore it.

Rear crossmember stripped to bare metal Some rust still lurks behind metal plates

This part was a fully welded join But rust lurks here too

All repairs to the chassis were done and work moved on to repainting the chassis. Olaf used the well respected POR 15 paint for this.

Lots of care and attention was lavished on the chassis, including cleaning out of internal chassis spaces. the internals of the chassis were also given an anti-rust treatment. With the chassis refurb now completed, other parts have become the centre of attention. The axles were checked for signs of wear and leaks prior to refurb and repaint, and small metal parts, brackets, and the petrol tanks were repainted.

We've not had an update on this for a while, hopefully the refurb is going on okay.
