Car Insurance for Land Rovers

Details

Land Rovers have been at the top of the 4x4 pile since the brand’s inception over sixty years ago. However, there are certain elements to Land Rover ownership that you should consider when looking for car insurance quotes.

Car insurance: the basics

Car insurance companies work out what you pay for your policy on a number of factors, including where you live, your driving history, your personal circumstances and the car itself – the latter usually based on The Association of British Insurer’s grouping system. Some insurers use their own systems, but roughly speaking, the higher the value of the car, the further up the grouping system it will be. Land Rovers – particularly the Range Rover marque – are put in higher insurance groups due to their value and power output.

There are three main groups of insurance available to UK drivers. These are as follows:

- Third party

This is the minimum compulsory level of insurance for UK motorists. It will protect third parties against injury and damage to their property however damage to your own vehicle is not covered. It is the cheapest option.

- Third party, fire and theft

This type of policy will offer the same cover as third party insurance, with the added benefit of having your own car covered in the event of damage or loss caused by fire or theft.

- Comprehensive

This is the most expensive policy, but will offer the greatest peace of mind. It offers cover for your own vehicle and to any full parties involved in any incidents.

Policies differ from insurer to insurer, so check carefully what’s on offer. Additional features may be provided at no extra cost with some companies, while there may be optional extras on others.

There are a number of factors unique to Land Rovers and 4x4s to take into account, too. If you are planning on doing any off-roading, then it is essential that you buy a policy which will include cover for this. Green-laning on the other hand (driving on the stretches of Britain’s unpaved roads) should be covered by your standard policy, but check with your insurer.

If you have made any modifications to your Land Rover in order to boost off-road performance, then it’s important that you declare them to your insurer. Modifications will increase the price of your policy due to the increased costs of replacing/ repairing the vehicle and their effect on handling and performance. If you fail to declare them, it may invalidate a claim.

There are a number of ways to save on your insurance. For instance, you could try the following:

- Stay safe

Keeping out of accidents and staying on the right side of the law will make you eligible for cheaper insurance, so avoid claims and convictions.

- Increase your security

Investing in approved insurance devices will make your car less likely to be broken in to or stolen, and this will be reflected in the price you pay for your policy.

- Pay annually

If you’re able to do so, pay for your insurance in one yearly payment rather than by monthly installments. By doing this, you will avoid the charges incurred by spreading the payment out.

- Lock it up

Keeping your Land Rover in a garage overnight will reduce the chance of it being targeted by thieves.

- Shop around

Searching for a quote online using a comparison website is a great way of finding a cheap car insurance premium. However, when comparing you should always check what the policy offers as well as the price so that you are adequately covered in the event of having to make a claim.
