The first military Austin K9 was introduced in 1952. It was derived from the civilian Austin Loadstar range of trucks, but the K9 was modified to make it more suitable for military service, with increased track, ground clearance and all-wheel drive.
Designated as the FV16000 series, the 4x4 K9 was rated at 1 ton and the chassis was adapted for use as a cargo vehicle, ambulance, water tanker and the most numerous was the wireless body. It was also available commercially between 1953 and 1955, where it was rated at 1.5 tons and was even prototyped as a 6x6.
Some of the later examples had additional cooling slots pressed into the bonnet, either side of the centre panel.
