Heinel Range Rover Ambulance

Details

The Heinel Range Rover ambulance conversion was made by coachbuilder Heinel Karosserifabrik in Malmö, Sweden. The Heinel ambulance was extra long wheelbase and had a chassis stretch of 1 metre (39.4 inches) between the axles, longer than any other Range Rover ambulance conversion. (see pics below, which show the modification area)

Heinel's design included the addition of extra doors on the sides, a one piece rear door arrangement and a raised roofline. The vehicle was developed for use in remote areas of the Norwegian mountains. This special Range Rover conversion was in service for many years and became legendary in Norway due to their outstanding capability on the snowdrifts and winter roads in the North of Norway where most of these ambulances were in use.

1973 Heinel Ambulance

The first Range Rover Heinel ambulance was converted in 1973 and the conversions were available for some years. Total production was approximately 20-30 Range Rover ambulances, mainly sold in Norway.

The Land-Rover Special Projects Department had one Range Rover Heinel ambulance for evaluation at Solihull in the mid-seventies. The conversion performed well and British Leyland issued the Press Photo seen below.
