Freelander 2
Freelander 2 / LR2 2006 -
In July 2006, Freelander 2 (LR2 in some markets) was launched at the British International Motor Show in London. Totally redesigned, yet still with that familiar Freelander look, Freelander 2 has become a hatchback, having lost the side hinged door. Larger than its predecessor, it's only a tad smaller than a Series 1 Discovery in width and length. The spare wheel has understandably been removed from the back door, and now hides in the floor of the rear load area. The new Freelander also benefits from the terrain response controls, although this is not as comprehensive as on the larger land rovers. Two engines are available at present, A Ford/PSA (Peugeot/Citroen) 2.2litre TD4 diesel, giving 158 bhp, and a Volvo derived 3.2 litre i6 straight 6 petrol, giving 229bhp. These are coupled to a 6 speed automatic gearbox, although a 6 speed manual gearbox is an option on the diesel. The 4 wheel drive system has been designed to drive the rear wheels from a standing start, or if wheel spin occurs. Otherwise, the front wheels are the main tractive force.
Specs: 4,500mm long x 1,910mm wide (2,180 including the mirrors) x 1,740mm high with all new monocoque structure.
The Freelander 2 is the first full production Land Rover model not built at Solihull. It is instead being built at the Halewood plant in Liverpool (which also builds the Jaguar 'x' type).
